Back to basics
Why do you need window coverings?
They darken the room, prevent prying eyes from peeping in, provide insulation, and controls light from streaming in.
Blinds are one kind of window coverings usually made of slats, strung together. The width of the slats varies starting from 1” to larger
slats. Selecting the right size is important, as you don’t want to compromise on the aesthetic appeal and functionality. Slats are strung
together with support strings, called ladders. Blinds are hung from a headrail. They also have a cord tilt to tilt the slats; and lift
cords to raise or lower the slats.
You can accessorize your blinds with valances, cloth tapes and cornices to enhance the look. Don’t go overboard with the accessories. Keep it
simple. You don’t want a gaudy, over the top window.
Types of Wood blinds
There are wood blinds; wood blinds faux and faux blinds that have no wood! The last category is usually called ‘foam’ blinds. Stay clear of
them. Due to the total absence of wood, they tend to sag and have an unsightly appearance.
Faux Wood Blinds
The slats in these blinds are made of a composite material of wood powder and a liquid polymer. This is then encased in a vinyl covering. They
are stained or painted to resemble wooden slats.
People on a budget usually choose faux wood blinds. They are a cheaper alternative to wood blinds. Also, they are great in high humidity and
high moisture areas like the bathroom, kitchen and the kid’s room. Due to the near absence of wood, there are little chances for warping,
cracking or splitting; problems usually faced with ‘real’ wood blinds.
I like faux wood blind because…
o They are cost effective.
o They are great for high heat and high humid zones.
o Kid friendly.
o Easy maintenance – They are rugged and long lasting. All you need to do to clean them is to wipe with a soft cloth or vacuum. No
ultrasonic cleaning though.
o Environment friendly – controversial observation here; as there is a small amount of hardwood (wood powder) present, but much lesser in
quantity than wood blinds.
