o Study your window – Standard size or specialty shapes?  Is it a hard to fit window?

o Decide the look. Do you want the blinds to fit into the window opening (inside mount)? If you want the blinds to ‘hang out’, chose the outside mount option, where the blinds fall free on the wall.  Usually, the inside mount is preferred, as it gives a cleaner and neater look. Use outside mount, if the window opening is small or if the window is differently shaped.

o Place of installation –Installing in the living room, bedroom, kids room, kitchen, bathroom or garage? Choose right – remember wood window blinds are unsuitable in high moisture and humidity zones.

o Other points worth noting-You can also have a cordless option. Some retailers provide a touch system to lower or raise the blinds. You can also specify if you want ‘holds-down’ to hold the blind to the bottomrail. Some come with a motorized option, usually for wood blinds, to easily lower and raise the blinds.

o Check - Choose the type of blinds carefully. Read the fine print about the slats composition. Make sure that there is some wood content. Beware of the foam blinds, usually sold at hardware stores. If choosing real wood blinds – make sure that they are made of basswood.

o Warranty and custom made– What is the warranty period?  Are they custom made for that oddly shaped window?  They usually come ready-to-hang with your choice of stains or colors – limited for faux wood blinds and greater variety for wood window blinds.
